What is an elective abroad?
Babson Electives Abroad in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America combine intensive classroom experience with corporate site visits and guest lectures, providing students with real-time learning in the global marketplace. These three credit courses are taught by Babson faculty, and in some cases with host institution faculty members.  The also feature lectures by CEOs and senior managers of major companies, including prominent Babson alumni. Conveniently scheduled during the winter session and March break, and the summer sessions, electives abroad are open to all Babson students.

How is the course offering determined?
Courses are designed by faculty. The topics covered and places visited are based on the faculty area of interest and expertise, student demand, and student feedback from past courses. The course offerings are reviewed each year in order to offer the best and most interesting courses possible. The Glavin Office is responsible for the marketing and delivery of the courses offered.

How do I apply for an Elective Abroad?
Application and admission for all elective abroad courses is done in two phases – initial application and rolling admission application. NOTE:  Courses must meet minimum enrollment to proceed.  At a point during the rolling admission phase, if the course has not met the minimum number of participants, it may be determined that the course needs to be cancelled.  The Program Manager will alert all students who are enrolled in the course in advance of the decision, and will work with students to find alternative placement options, however alternative placement is not guaranteed.

Phase One – Initial Application:  Students can apply to any of the courses by visiting the course brochure page and clicking the “Apply Now” button.  Placement will be done in accordance with the Elective Abroad Application & Rolling Admission Timeline.  Students will be notified if they have been admitted into a course or placed on the Deferred list.  After receiving the placement notification via email, students will have two weeks to accept placement by submitting required materials and the non-refundable deposit.  If no email reply is received and/or the materials are not submitted by the deadline, your name is removed from the course.

Phase Two – Rolling Admission Application:  Once initial application placements are announced the course applications will be re-opened.  Students can apply to be considered through the rolling admission process for any of the courses by visiting the course brochure page and clicking the “Apply Now” button.  Placement will be done in accordance with the Elective Abroad Application & Rolling Admission Timeline on a monthly basis.  NOTE:  Those students who were placed on the Deferred list in the initial application phase will be placed first if a spot becomes available, followed by those who applied during the Rolling Admission Phase.  All students will receive a notification whether they have been admitted into a course or placed on the Deferred list.  After receiving the placement notification via email, students will have two weeks to accept placement by submitting required materials and the non-refundable deposit.  If no email reply is received and/or the materials are not submitted by the deadline, your name is removed from the course.


Can I apply for more than one Elective Abroad?
Yes, you can apply to more than one course, however we do ask that you only apply to courses for which you are ready and able to commit, as your lack of commitment may take the opportunity away for another student. 

Does it matter when, in the application process, I apply for a course?
The application process is done on a rolling basis, with two acceptance periods.  Applying during the initial phase will improve your chances of getting placed either in the course or on the Deferrred list ahead of those who apply during Rolling Admission phase explained above.


Who can participate in an Elective Abroad?
These courses are open to all graduate students who have completed one half of their studies at Babson. CLICK HERE to check eligibility.

May I bring my spouse/partner on the course?
No. The Electives Abroad are intensive academic programs and cannot accommodate additional, non-course participants.

Can I stay with family or friends in the destination country during the course?
No. The Electives Abroad are academic courses and due to the complexities in managing the group abroad all students must stay in the course accommodations.


Do I need to know the local language to participate in an Elective Abroad?
No. All classes and site visits are conducted in English, however it is advised that you learn some basic phrases before the travel portion of the course. CLICK HERE to access the Mango Languages resource offered free through the Babson Horn Library.


Do I need a passport/visa?
It is the responsibility of each student to secure their own passport and visa for any Elective Abroad. It is expected that the student will familiarize themselves with passport and visa requirements before registering for any Elective Abroad. No refunds will be given due to visa related issues. The Glavin Office will provide travel specific information to assist students in completing their visa application upon student request. The most updated information should be obtained through the destination country’s consulate office. Given the number of course participants, the Glavin Office is unable to process student visa applications.

*Please note passports must be valid six months post travel.

What if my passport is expired when I apply?
Once you are accepted you will be required to submit a copy of your passport, at that time you will need to let your Elective Abroad Program Manager know when you expect to receive your renewed passport.  You cannot travel with the course if this information is not received by the Glavin Office, so once you receive your renewed passport it is your responsibility to return to your Education Abroad application and complete the questionnaire.

What are the requirements for Elective Abroad?
First you should check the eligibility requirements.  After you have identified the courses of interest from those you are eligible for, you can check if there are any pre-requisites by visiting the individual course brochures pages.

How do I register for an Elective Abroad, once I have been accepted and have made my deposit?
The Glavin Office will register you for the Elective Abroad once all required acceptance materials have been completed and final payments have been made to Glavin Office.

Which Academic Session will the Elective Abroad be registered into? Can an Elective Abroad be registered in another session than it occurs?
Registration for all Electives Abroad is done by the Glavin Office.
Courses that travel in December/January are registered in the Winter session.
Course that travel over March Break are registered in the Spring Semester term.
Courses with travel in May/June are registered in the Summer 1st Session.
Courses with travel in July/August are registered in Summer 2nd Session.

How is the program fee for each course determined?
Costs vary for each course. The amount charged to students is based on the total costs incurred by Babson for running the course. With the exception of a single room supplement charge (when offered), the price is fixed. It is not possible to offer a la carte pricing for different components of the course.

What is covered by the program fees?
The program fee for all courses includes: local accommodations, internal travel, local transfers, program meals and excursions (i.e. not all meals or personal expenses are covered). If a single room is requested and available, a supplement will be charged to the student. Due to the complexities of managing a group trip, the Glavin Office uses group bookings whenever possible. Students do not have the option of making their own internal transportation (flight, train, bus) arrangements. Some courses may have a charge for use of local facilities or guest lecturers. For all local charges, the Glavin Office negotiates the best deal possible, including reciprocal agreements with host schools if possible. The faculty flight, accommodation, and daily expenses are included in the program fee charged to students. In some instances these costs may be subsidized by grants, academic division budgets, or outside gifts.

What is not covered by the program fees?
Fees do not cover tuition, international flights (to/from US), student meals (unless specified in the itinerary), entrance fees on cultural visits not included on the itinerary, charges for phone calls/internet use, or any other services not specifically included in the itinerary.

How does my financial aid package affect my expenses on an Elective Abroad?
You should contact your SFS advisor to learn more about their financial aid packages and how they affect expenses incurred.

How do we arrange for payments through our employer if they are paying for the course?
The Glavin Office will send students a receipt of full payment that can be submitted to your employer for reimbursement of the program fee. Contact your Electives Abroad Program Manager to discuss specific employer requirements for submission. Reimbursement for course tuition can be handled directly through Student Financial Services.
